Best Grass Types for Dogs
Fescue and perennial ryegrass are grasses that are most resistant to dog urine damage. Bermuda grass and Kentucky bluegrass, on the other hand, are the most sensitive to dog urine according to Jerry Baker’s Green Grass Magic: Tips, Tricks, and Tonics for Growing the Toe-Ticklinest Turf in Town! (Jerry Baker’s Good Gardening series).(Perennial ryegrass is also better than most for high traffic areas.)
He also includes a recipe for a tonic that can be used on the brown or yellow patches caused by dog urine and droppings.
Before using, remove the dead or dying grass. Overspray the affected area with 1 cup baby shampoo to 20 gallons water. Then apply gypsum according to instructions. Wait a week, then mix and apply the recipe below.
Doggie Damage Repair Tonic
1 can beer
1 can cola (not diet)
1 cup ammonia
Combine the above ingredients and put in 20 gallon hose-end sprayer. Overspray the turf every other week until the normal color returns.
